Every Volumizing Hair Product is Lying — But, Shockingly, Not This One

When I was 19 or 20 I took a medication that made me lose half my hair volume and it never came back. This is what sparked my love affair with dry shampoo, and turned me into a maniac who will try any product that promises volume. It’s a continual bummer, not only because I miss my hefty hair, but because volumizing products rarely, if ever, deliver on their promises — even the expensive ones! My optimism continues, though, and when I was in TJ Maxx and saw It’s a 10 Miracle Blowdry Volumizer, I thought, “What the hell, let’s try it.” I was convinced I’d be returning it. I planned on washing my hair the very next day so I could start over. But then… it was amazing? And now? It’s a holy grail product.

After I wash my hair (I don’t brush or comb it), I wrap it up in a microfiber turban (I use Aquis — my specific one isn’t available anymore but these are) and putter around a bit. Once I feel like the towel has sucked up some of the water from my hair, I take it down and spray It’s a 10 Miracle Blowdry Volumizer generously all over my head. The product itself is a thickish liquid, but everything about this packaging makes you think it’s a aerosol. It’s just a pump bottle is aerosol clothing. I don’t know why! Anyway, I focus on the roots, and lift up sections to get at ALL the roots. Only after this step do I brush my hair. I have no idea if this is true, but I feel like by only brushing after I apply product, the product is being distributed evenly throughout my hair. Once my hair is detangled, time to dry. I blow dry my hair upside down, because magazines in the 90s said this helps add volume to your hair, and that has stuck in my brain for decades (Math? No. Beauty tips from a 1996 issue of InStyle? Yes).

The first time I used Miracle Blowdry Spray, this is the part when I started to have doubts, because my hair started to feel crunchy and sticky. The bottle specifically says it WON’T be crunchy and sticky, but again, all volumizing hair products are a lie, so this tracked with my previous experiences. I flipped my hair back over and I looked like if Beetlejuice used too much gel, but I persevered. I started to brush my hair out, and quickly realized all the promises It’s a 10 made were real. The crunch vanished, my hair wasn’t stiff or sticky, but it WAS thicker and looked really, really good. I didn’t have cartoonish volume, but I looked like I had full, healthy hair. Normally after I blow dry I immediately use Not Your Mother’s Dry Shampoo, but I didn’t feel like I needed it! I had the volume, I had the hold, I had everything I wanted out of freshly washed, blowdried hair. And it STAYED looking good for DAYS.

The bottle is dented because I dropped it, not because I bought it at TJ Maxx

I still use my dry shampoo trifecta, but I do very minimal sprays of Not Your Mother’s on wash day, then use Bumble and Bumble Post Workout Mist and Kristin Ess Powder as usual. It’s a 10 Miracle Blowdry Volumizer makes it feel like I don’t need to use Kristin Ess before bed, but if I want my hair to last a week between washings, I’ve found I need to do a little bit of dry shampoo before bed regardless of if I feel like I need it.

The first thing I did when I realized I could never live without Miracle Blowdry Volumizer was check if it was still being sold. I got it at TJ Maxx, so there was a decent chance I’d never see it again. But thank GOD Miracle Blowdry Volumizer is readily available, it’s just $5 more than at TJ’s. Even if I have to pay $20 instead of $15, I will always be keeping It’s a 10 Miracle Blowdry Volumizer at hand. I can’t believe it works as well as it does - it truly is a miracle.
