Wear, Watch, Want #132: The Cheerful Chilly Tech Edition

Wear: Winter Accessories

We had the temperature absolutely plummet here in the PNW, and I was so glad that I never got rid of my winter accoutrement from my life as a midwesterner. I find that if my ears get cold, I feel miserable, and it hurts not just my ears but my jaw, my head… it just sucks. BUT, if I wear a warm hat I get so hot that I feel like I’m going to die. So my two favorite accessories for staying comfortable in the cold are a thin beanie, and some earmuffs, preferably the kind that go around the back of your head. Depending on what’s going on with my hair that day, I wear one or the other, and both still allow me to wear AirPods. The hat and earmuffs I have are from Target approximately 100 years ago, but this hat looks thin, is made of cashmere, and is on sale (I might get one for myself, it looks awesome). These earmuffs are also much nicer that the ones I have and look at that, I’ve convinced myself to upgrade everything.

Watch: Cheer

I realize that it’s January, but I think Cheer is one of my favorite documentaries of the year. I burned through all six episodes, following a junior college cheer team through their preparation for the national competition, and through that competition, and beyond, and once it was done I immediately missed them. If you haven’t seen Cheer, you are so lucky, because now you can go watch it and experience all that joy and heartbreak and stress and triumph for the very first time. I don’t really know how to express how fantastic I think this series is, so I’ll just copy the notes I took while watching.

  • So far we’ve met two guys named Nevada Henderson and Dahlston Delgado. I love it here.

  • Monica wears a rhinestone Apple Watch band, she has a live laugh love LAMPSHADE and she IS Sandy Bullock in The Blind Side.

  • That lampshade though. Would love a 6 part doc on that.

  • Truly WHAT is this community college. It has dorms? And like, multiple places to eat? They have their own branded charter busses to take them to the airport?? And a teacher that loves Trump and guns so it’s not all perfect.

  • How many necklaces does one cheer dad need?!

  • Astrology must be fake because Monica *isn’t* a Capricorn??? How. (The instagram stalking I did to find out her birthday is in February. Concerning.)

  • There’s one guy on the team who looks like a small Andre the Giant

  • They do the serenity prayer after practice???

  • I would kill for every one of these precious kids

  • Every time I think “this kid has the toughest story” AND THEN THERES ANOTHER ONE

  • Of course Allie cries all the time, they’re hurtling her into the air and she weighs 90 pounds, and all she has to catch her are a bunch of 20 year old boys

  • Would love to fast forward a decade to see Jerry becoming Monica’s protege as the greatest cheer coach ever

  • Wish Jade was a featured character. She looks fun. Also TT. Were they not tragic enough to have starring roles?!

  • Thrilled to see them using Not Your Mother’s dry shampoo, the best in the genre

  • “The gas is on. If you set yourself on fire the world will come and watch you burn.” What is the FUCK does this mean?

  • Is the guy who said that the same guy who got an inspirational quote from the wall a Bubba Gumps?

  • The alum cheerleader who has a cartoon villain mustache lifting the injured cheerer while he’s WEEPING. Like a Kerri Strug moment but MORE POWERFUL Just as powerful? La’darius’s brother watching on a phone as silent tears run down his face. I MEAN.

I cried at least once during every episode. I love the entire Navarro Cheer program. And I hope someday Monica gets the chance to physically fight a homophobic pastor.

Want: Apple Watch

I recently replaced my 6+ year old iPad and was somehow shocked at how much better it was than the one I was using. I could NOT get over it. It got me thinking, what else could I upgrade? I have a FitBit and love it, as I’ve mentioned before, and I started looking at Apple Watches. Aaaaand now I’m planning on getting an Apple Watch. I once said that iPads make no sense and no one will ever need one. Now I use one every day. I also thought it was silly that Apple made watches irrelevant when we just looked at the time on our phones, and then Apple went and made a watch. But now I can’t wait to have one. I’m a gadget-loving fool I guess.
