Wear, Watch, Want #144: The Timely Burger Ring Edition

Wear: Apple Watch

I got an Apple Watch in January, an upgrade from the FitBit I’d been wearing for about a year and a half. It is… the best. I was one of those people who thought Apple Watches were ridiculous, particularly because Apple got us to all stop looking at watches because we were constantly looking at our phones, and now they wanted to make watches? What a brilliant scam. I love my Apple Watch now, she is my best friend and once the battery died in the middle of barre class and my immediate, honest reaction was, “Well, how can I possibly go on??” Anyway, the more recent issue with my Apple Watch, like everything these days, is quarantine related. If you’re an Apple Watch user, are you having trouble closing your rings each day? You need to meet three goals to close each respective ring, and while 30 minutes exercise is no biggie, and I have my active calorie goal set to 500 (the only goal you set yourself, and I wanted something that was pretty easy to reach so that I could, you know, reach it every day), but I have been struggling to hit 12 hours of standing. You can’t change your stand goal, and while the internet says you can cheat it my lifting your arm, that has never worked for me. One night I was about to sleep, and I noticed the hour had changed and I was at 11 hours of standing. So I got out of bed and stood for the 45 seconds or whatever it takes to log you as standing, then went to sleep. Is this the most controlling, capricorn thing I’ve ever done? No. Not even close.

Watch: Nadiya’s Time to Eat

I love Nadiya Hussain, the Bake Off Angel who stole the winning cake stand and our hearts. I got her cookbook even though the whole thing is in Euro measurements and calls for non-American ingredients like caster sugar. (Also speaking of good books by Bake Off alums, have you read Ruby Tandoh’s book Eat Up! ? It is DIVINE). Nadiya’s Time to Eat is all about making great food, but with shortcuts. She shares some of her favorite recipes and explains how she “cheats” to make them. She also goes to farms and factories around England to find out where food comes from. She goes to the Marmite factory! And a mushroom farm! I had never thought about how mushrooms were grown and I could have watched an hour just about that. She also goes and helps a person or family solve a food-related problem. All this in a half hour show! It’s so soothing and I don’t know if the kitchen she’s in is a set or her real house but it is so NICE. It’s colorful and homey and just.. I love Nadiya and I love everything about her new show.

Want: Shake Shack

In the Before Times, the shopping center in my neighborhood was undergoing a huge remodel, and that included getting a Shake Shack. It was meant to open in Spring. Now? Who knows. I haven’t ordered takeout or delivery yet during my quarantine - it just feels kind of weird! But if that Shake Shack opened? I’d be all over it. I’d eat Shake Shack too much, I bet. PLEASE SHAKE SHACK OPEN YOUR DOORS THIS IS WHAT AMERICA NEEDS.
