This Headache Headband is Helping Me Reduce My Painkiller Intake

I get headaches often. Why? Unknown! But I used to get migraines that knocked me flat every afternoon, so the occasional headache isn’t the worst thing I’ve dealt with. What IS the worst is when a doctor tells you that you shouldn’t be taking whatever it is you’ve been taking that’s managed your symptoms. Oh, I can’t take four ibuprofen each time I get a bad headache, which is something a doctor told me to do? But now you, a different doctor, are shocked that I’m doing it?? I mean look, I ALSO don’t want to be maxing out on Advil, three days a week, so I explored some non-drug headache relief options, one of which was this headache hat.

It’s well loved and I pulled it straight from the freezer to take this photo so please excuse the appearance

It’s not really a hat, it’s a headband, and it only works for certain types of pain, but it DOES work. I keep my TheraIce RX Headache Headband in a Ziploc bag in the freezer (but it can also be heated in the microwave if you prefer heat therapy) and pull it out whenever I’m feeling headachey. There is no velcro, no little ice packs you have to maneuver juuuust right, it’s just two gel packs sewn into the front and back of a sleek headband. The sides are left gel-less so you dont freeze off your ears - which is nice! You can slide the TheraIce RX Headband wherever works best, and dont have to worry about anything getting snagged in your hair or losing the ice pack somewhere within the headband. it’s also designed in such a way that you can wear it over your eyes (it will fully block out all light) or above your eyes as a headband. Which leads me to my one gripe about this otherwise great product: You can’t easily use it while wearing glasses.

I can’t pull the headband down any lower on account of glasses. But it does still work!

If I’m feeling crummy, I’m going to be in my glasses (as opposed to contacts) and I’m going to be starting at TikTok or watching TV. I cannot see without glasses, but the TheraIce RX Headache Headband kind of pushes down my glasses, so they’re either digging into my face or hanging on the tip of my nose. It’s just annoying, not any reason to NOT get yourself a headache headband, but something you should be aware of. If I’m laying down (which I probably am if I’m dealing with a raging headache) I tend to keep the headband folded flat and stick it behind my head, right at the base of my neck. The headband is thin and the gel inside is super soft and cushiony, so I’m not contorted into a weird position that just adds to my pain. In fact, this is usually how I first use the headband straight out of the freezer, because it’s too cold to wrap around my whole head.

If you too get frequent headaches, and have been scolded for taking painkillers, maybe give a TheraIce Rx Headache Headband a try. I was doubtful it would do anything but now i reach for this goofy thing multiple times a week.
