These Ultra-Affordable Shadows Apply and Wear Like a Million Bucks

I’m often a Sephora or Target shopper when it comes to beauty, but there are whole brands that are only sold online, or at Ulta, that I know nothing about. I find Ulta, oftentimes, to be a bit depressing (my local Ulta is in a Dead Mall that is due to be razed at any moment, which I think is a factor), but now that some of my favorite things are sold there, I’m a more frequent Ulta shopper. One brand I’ve seen and admired was Juvia’s Place. The eyeshadow palettes are stunning, and I’ve wanted to give The Nubian Palette a try for awhile now.

Quick side note (1 of 2, actually): I’m white. Juvia’s Place is inspired by Africa, but their goal is to make makeup that works for every skin tone. I, as a white person who has never had an issue finding a matching shade, think it’s important to support black owned businesses that cater to often overlooked groups. But… more on that later.

I got The Nubian Mini Palette, which has six shadows, three of which are matte, and three shimmer. The colors are absolutely gorgeous, particularly if you, like me, are obsessed with coppery shades. This palette normally sells for $10, which is still a steal, but it was on sale for $8 (and now it’s $7.50!)

The color payoff is richer than any shadow I think I’ve ever tried. Colour Pop has come close, but I’ve only ever swatched their shimmery Super Shock Shadows. The pigmentation of Juvia’s Place shadows is so amazing, it makes you wonder how they can be so affordable, AND how much pricier makeup doesn’t have color payoff like this.

Swatches represent top row, L-R, and then bottom row, L-R of the palette

Now, unfortunately, for side note #2: I did a little Googling because I wanted to know more about Juvia’s Place, and I found some controversy. I can’t get a lot of detail besides stories like this, but it’s been months and there hasn’t been any statement or update clarifying things. Did they make amends? The brand is apparently being boycotted by beauty influencers I admire, but I can’t find any quotes from the influencers themselves! The palette is great, the shadows are incredible, but I’m not feeling great about this situation that appears to have disappeared without a resolution. If you know, let ME know, thanks.
