Wear, Watch, Want #149: The Sunny Masked Appliance Edition

Wear: Trader Joe’s SPF 50 Spray Sunscreen

When it’s not too hot, I like to take Hero on a long walk. Lately he will give up and drag me home if it’s over like, 70, so I like to take advantage of the fact that it’s JULY, but we still have plenty under-70 days. That being said, I still make sure to put on sunscreen before we head out. I was having a hard time with my usual tube of sunscreen - i’d get too much and end up with white streaks on my clothes, or I’d have a hard time making sure the backs of my shoulders were covered… I like sun protection to be super easy, so that I’ll actually follow through and use it. I picked up a bottle of Trader Joe’s SPF 50 Spray Sunscreen, and it’s been a game changer. I can just mist myself all over, maybe give it a little rub in if I feel like it, and i’m ready to head out the door.

Watch: Watchmen

I didn’t watch HBO’s Watchmen series this past fall. Real talk? I have tried to read the original Watchmen graphic novel multiple times and never finished it. I’m not saying it’s badI I’m sure it’s as good as everyone says, but it’s not for me. So I wasn’t like, salivating at the idea of HBO’s kinda-sorta spinoff series. I don’t know why I decided to try it out a few weeks ago, but I did, and I mainlined the whole series in two days. It is VERY good, and again, this is coming from a person who is completely uninterested in the source material.

I give all the credit to Regina King, who had me captivated the whole time. Could my issue with the graphic novel be that it’s mostly about putting the MEN in Watchmen? YES I THINK SO. Regina King’s Angela Abar is the STAR of this show and she shines. The way the whole story unfolds with her at the center helped ground the story, keep me invested, and basically fall in love with her and hate absolutely every person who so much as looks at her the wrong way. I think the series ended perfectly and should not get a second season, but I would watch the hell out of it just to see Regina King embody this character again.

PS: As an Oklahoma! fan since toddlerhood, I loved that the first episode relies heavily on this game-changing musical - and if you know Oklahoma!, you know exactly what’s going to happen in that “surprise” ending.

PPS: I could talk about Oklahoma! for hours. It has, like many older bits of culture, been so watered down that people think it’s a boring musical when it fact it’s DARK and SUBVERSIVE and literally changed the way musicals were written from then on.

Want: Cuisinart 14-Cup Custom Food Processor

I have killed two food processors. I got a Kitchenaid one at Target, and while trying to make some date, peanut butter, and banana balls, the motor died. I contacted Kitchenaid and they said they’d send me a new one, but because of Covid it took five weeks for the new one to show up. Then I tried the same recipe and I killed THAT one too. I was so mad. I felt like a fool. So now I’m going big. I’m getting a fancy food processor that can handle tough jobs, dammit. This Cuisinart one is Wirecutter’s top pick, it’s on sale for July 4th, and I have already ordered it and cannot wait till it gets here. I’d like to ceremoniously throw my two dead Kitchenaid food processors off a cliff, but I’ll restrain myself.
