These Oft-Recommended Mascaras are Truly Smudge-Proof

Not to brag, but lately I’ve been putting on a little makeup and leaving my house. I noticed, though, that my mascara was smudging under my eyes -something that didn’t happen before.

Maybe I’m getting older, maybe lockdown changed my eyelashes’ ability to hold onto mascara, but something was different, and I didn’t like it. I began a hunt for a new, better, non-smudgy mascara.

I did a lot of research. I watched TikToks, I scrolled through Ulta and Target and Sephora’s offerings. I briefly considered tubing mascara, but I was skeptical of their ability to hold a curl. Finally, I decided to try another beloved mascara, Kiss Me Heroine Make

The packaging may be familiar to you: A ton of Japanese, a blonde Anime lady, and somewhere in that cacophony of graphic design, a tube of mascara. I don’t read Japanese, so I have no idea what’s on the packaging and why so much needs to be said, but I don’t need to be able to read a package when there’s a horde of people on the internet saying this mascara is THE BEST. And as an added bonus, Kiss Me has a US site, where not only can you read all about their products in English, you can choose from ALL of their products and KNOW they are authentic, something many third party sites can’t offer.

I ended up ordering quite a few things, but the main standout is the mascaras. I didn’t get exactly what I wanted, becasue some things weren’t in stock, but I got a tube of Volume Up Super Waterproof Mascara in Brown, and a tube of Volume and Curl Super Waterproof Mascara in Black.

Both mascaras go on like a dream, hold a curl, and do not smudge ONE BIT. I don’t wear mascara on my bottom lashes, so I can’t speak to that, but I like multiple coats on my top lashes, and even when I’m at my most heavy-handed, these mascaras stay put.

And do you know virtually impossible it is to find a brown waterproof mascara? It’s practically unheard of! But Kiss Me offers many, if not all of their waterproof mascaras in brown. (For the uninitiated, waterproof mascara holds a curl better than non-waterproof, and it’s easy to remove with any oil cleanser, like my fave from Clinique).
