Wear, Watch, Want #203: The Ethereal, Vibrant Mixed Media Edition

Wear: Ethereal Cocoon Wrap

I don’t know about you, but all I want is coziness. I want to be swaddled, I want to be under four blankets, I want my wardrobe to be entirely made of layers. I am a cardigan aficionado, and I tried on this wrap sweater at Athleta kind of on a whim, and it was like wearing a little piece of heaven. AND it was ON SALE. I love this thing. It is 100% my aesthetic and is coxy without making me overheat. I will say, the sleeves are not full length on me, and I tend to push them up a bit anyway, but I consider that a bonus. All wrapped up BUT I can use my arms and wash my hands without big ol’ sleeves in the way? A dream!

Watch/Listen: A Whole Lot of Stuff

I’ve consumed a lot of things in the past month or so, and instead of dragging it out over weeks, let’s just do a big recap of the things that stood out for me:

White Lotus: A lot of people didn’t seem to get this one (Everyone is bad. There, I explained it.), but it was a nice bit of escapism everyone seemed to consume together (by everyone I mean strangers on Twitter). Connie Britton, to me, was a standout, because she made you forget she was acting. She WAS that character, just like she WAS Tami Taylor. We don’t appreciate Connie Britton’s talent enough!

Aack Cast: Jamie Loftus’s podcast about Cathy comics (their creation, influence, impact, and more) was so much more than a podcast about an oft-mocked comic strip. I had no feelings about Cathy before listening to Aack Cast, and now I think Cathy is, if nothing else, a vital historic document. I loved Loftus’s previous podcast, My Year in Mensa, and after listening to Aack Cast I went back and listened to the podcast she made in between the two, Lolita Podcast, which I also loved.

The Other Two Season Two: I told you The Other Two is great, and I’m thrilled that the show got picked up by HBO Max for a second (and eventual third!) season, and more people are discovering this gem. I watched the first season again before starting season 2, because it had been two years, and I forgot all but the main details. The second time around it was just as good, AND this time I didn’t have to watch on the Comedy Central website, enduring the same four commercials over and over.

Malignant: HBO Max is releasing movies on their platform as well as in theaters this year, which gave me the opportunity to watch Malignant, a truly baffling film that I suggest you watch, if only for the laughs. I would never pay to see this movie, which is completely ridiculous, and is so goofy and ignorant that it can’t even manage to be offensively anti-adoption (which it is, BTW). A few key details! It stars Grace from Peaky Blinders in a wig that IS part of the plot, but it did not have to be THAT bad. Her sister is introduced by her hospital bedside dressed for “work” as a party princess. This is neither important nor mentioned EVER AGAIN. By the end, I kept thinking of this sketch from Human Giant. Really. The end of this movie IS a comedy sketch.

Want: Vibrant Spin Shoes

I went through a whole saga of buying spin shoes when I first started indoor cycling at home. At one point I had three pairs of shoes in my house, because stores were closed and I couldn’t figure out which shoes were best for me. I finally got that sorted, and all was well, until I found a different pair on sale at REI that worked better. Now I still have my original “good” spin shoes, plus the Pearl Izumi Quests that I got late last year, which I wear almost exclusively now. But I have shoe envy. Tunde, my favorite Peloton instructor, has a collection of spin shoes in bright colors and I am SO ENVIOUS. She has blue metallic ones, bright red ones, neon yellow ones. I WANT SOME. These shoes are more expensive that i’m prepared for (my Pearl Izumis were $75 on sale), but I did sone searching and found some that are around $100 and still have some personality. These ones by Nike are leopard print, my favorite color, but I’m not so into white shoes, even if they do feature leopard. But THEN I found my beloved Pearl Izumi Quest comes in a fluorescent red. I need them.
